The Least Deserving Best Picture Nominees

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Friday, February 10, 2012, In : oscars

With the recent Best Picture nomination for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, a movie which had been critically savaged up until the nominations were announced, it seems like a good time to reflect on some of Oscars worst nominations in its most prestigious category.  Now, let me qualify my list first by saying that - although I have seen all the Best Picture winners - I have not seen every Best Picture nominee, so the list is a little front-loaded.  But seriously, who among us h...

Ranking the Best Pictures

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Friday, March 4, 2011,
Now that "The King's Speech" has officially beat out "The Social Netowrk" for Best Picture, it's time to add it to the age-old Best Picture bitch-fest that comes around every year: Is "Forrest Gump" really better that "Pulp Fiction?"   Is Chicago" really better than "Lord of the Rings?" And - my personal fave: Is "Shakespeare in Love" really better than "Saving Private Ryan?" (Answers? No, Maybe and hell yes)

It seems a good time for whatever it's worth to suit all the Best Picture winners up...

Oscars 2009 - My wrap up

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Thursday, March 11, 2010, In : oscars
So Oscars have now come and gone and what's my take this year?

ZZzzzZZZzzzzzzzZzzzzz...

Sadly, with mostly predictable winners (not that that helped me in the pool any), boring speeches, blah hosts and a stripped-down, but yet over-stuffed ceremony, I found this year's Oscars a big let-down.  I was happy that Avatar walked away with only 3 prizes- two of which I'm sure it deserevd.  It is a gorgeous-looking film with ground breaking special effects, so I have no qualms with it winning art dir...

In a Perfect World...

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Friday, February 26, 2010,
So predictions aside and getting down to just who I plain do and don't like:

Best Picture
Who I would like to win: Up.  It's already a classic.  It'll last forever.
Who I want to lose: Um.. The Blind Side.  Did you not see my previous posting?

Best Score
Who I would like to win: Michael Giacchino - Up.  Watch the first 10 minutes and tell me I'm wrong.

Best Cinematography
Who I want to lose: Avatar.  Sorry folks, but animated movies don't count in this category!

Best Sound Mixing
Who I want to lose: T...

Why I don't Want to see "The Blind Side"

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Monday, February 22, 2010,
Now - in writing this - I fully & freely admit that I don't know much more about The Blind Side than I've picked up from the trailer, but The Blind Side just seems so disgustingly over-simplified and sappy—and let's not forget -  racist. What's that you say?  How can this movie about uplifting an impoverished black man possibly be racist?  Well,it plays the same old tired "magical African American friend" card, first called out in Time Magazine some 10 years ago.

The Legend of Bagger Va...

Another Loss for Avatar

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Monday, February 22, 2010, In : oscars

Hooray for the BAFTAS!  This weekend, The Hurt Locker continued its hot streak by nabbing the Best Picture and Best Director topohies at the British Film ceremony, leaving Avatar in the dust.  While this is very good news for the indie in its quest to capture the Oscar in 2 weeks, it certainly doesn't clinch the deal: let's not forget that Cameron's Titanic was a complete shut out at the BAFTAS and went on to tie Ben Hur for the most Oscars given to one picture.  Still, this certainly gives "...

Two Weeks Away

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Saturday, February 20, 2010, In : oscars
So with just two weeks to go until Oscars, I decided to revisit my picks.  I'm still happy that I chose to use my split pick for Picture.  It is looking by all markers that "The Hurt Locker" will have the edge, but I won't count out Hollywood's predilection to sell out and vote for the bigger, crappier movie.  Half the town was employed for "Avatar" and it was James Cameron's decade-long quest, realized.  The academy loves that stuff.

I'm feeling more secure about my pick of director, though...
