The Least Deserving Best Picture Nominees

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Friday, February 10, 2012, In : oscars

With the recent Best Picture nomination for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, a movie which had been critically savaged up until the nominations were announced, it seems like a good time to reflect on some of Oscars worst nominations in its most prestigious category.  Now, let me qualify my list first by saying that - although I have seen all the Best Picture winners - I have not seen every Best Picture nominee, so the list is a little front-loaded.  But seriously, who among us h...

Ranking the Best Pictures

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Friday, March 4, 2011,
Now that "The King's Speech" has officially beat out "The Social Netowrk" for Best Picture, it's time to add it to the age-old Best Picture bitch-fest that comes around every year: Is "Forrest Gump" really better that "Pulp Fiction?"   Is Chicago" really better than "Lord of the Rings?" And - my personal fave: Is "Shakespeare in Love" really better than "Saving Private Ryan?" (Answers? No, Maybe and hell yes)

It seems a good time for whatever it's worth to suit all the Best Picture winners up...

Another Year has Come and Gone...

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Friday, January 21, 2011, In : oscars
So this Oscar season has been a bit of a "meh" season for me.  Not a lot of "buzz" movies out there I'm dying to see and my favorite movie of the year so far?  Toy Story 3.  I did enjoy Inception and The Social Network quite a lot as well, so I'm not completely out of the loop, but it is sure that I will not complete last year's feat of having seen all 10 nominees before Oscar night.  Oh well..

Let this serve as the official reminder and welcome that the Oscar pool will begin anew THIS TUESD...

Netflix Fridays: What Are We Watching Now?

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Saturday, May 1, 2010,
Our long, national nightmare is over!
Or rather, after receiveing many, MANY DVDs for Christmas, we've finally managed to burn our way through most of them and can once again return to renting TV shows from Netflix! Hurray! (We were so back-logged for a while, we shifted to watching only movies in an effort to not add Netflix-guilt to our existence.) To celebrate, we've bumped the remaining discs of "It's Gary Shandling's Show - Season 1" to the top of our queue. Sean really enjoyed thi...

Netflix Fridays: What are we watching now?

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Friday, April 23, 2010, In : Netflix Fridays
Coming up this week we have
"A Prairie Home Companion." No, not the so-so Altman film of the same name, but a film capturing an actual performance put on for Public Radio. What can I say? I'm an NPR nerd. Can't wait to see what the sound effects guy looks like!

.
.
.

Also up we have the long awaited viewing of "An Education," the second-to-last Best Picture nominee of this year for us to see, and the only one left which we will actually willingly-watch sober. (Fun fact! "Avatar" ju...

Netflix Fridays: What are We Watching Now?

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Friday, April 16, 2010, In : Netflix Fridays
So "Hannah" was good, but for me it wasn't funny enough to go along with the really funny Woody Allen films, but it wasn't moving enough to go along with classics like "Crimes & Misdemeanors" (which has to be the best Allen movie ever in my opinion. Actually, it's one of my favorite movies ever.) Sean, unfortunately, still doesn't get the "genius" of Woody Allen. Sheesh. Coming up this week we have: .

Waltz With Bashir - A gorgeously animated "documentary" a la Persepolis. It explores the m...

Netflix Fridays: What are we Watching Now?

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Friday, April 9, 2010, In : Netflix Fridays
So no one said moving was easy. Well, maybe someone said it, but if so that person was surely punched square in the nose by whoever heard him say it. As we've spent the past two weeks in an endless marathon of painting, spackling, packing and hauling, our Netflix attentions have fallen a bit by the wayside and poor Hannah (not to mention her Sisters) is still waiting on top of our TV. To keep her compnay, this week we've added The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Here's what Netflix has to say: Dam...

The "Best" Worst Movies

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, In : Margarita Movies
As many of you know, I'm a fan of "Margarita Movies," or - movies that are so bad that they're great.... and which a healthy dose of tequila helps "improve."  Why watch a bad movie when you could just watch a good one?  Well, I challenge you to find a big budget comedy as hilariously funny as "The Room" or "Poseidon."  So what are some of the Best  Worst Movies?  Here's a few I can't live without:

Xanadu - One of Zeus' nine daughters comes to Earth to inspire a frustrated painter to open a rol...

Netflix... Wednesdays: What Are We Watching Now?

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, In : Netflix Fridays
OK, So the return of Netflix Fridays didn't take long to throw off course.  What can I say?  I'm easily distrac... oooh!  Something shiny!  Let's see here's a few quick takes on what we've been watching plus a look at what's coming up:

The Men Who Stare At Goats - Neither as bad as the critics had claimed, nor as funny as the trailer made it look.  Overall disappointing, but George Clooney somehow still makes it a worthwhile rental.

2012 - Almost a great Margarita Movie, but gets too bogged dow...

The Return of Netflix Fridays: What Are We Watching

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Friday, March 12, 2010, In : Netflix Fridays
So now that we're settled in a new site and the Oscars are behind us, I figured it might be a good time to reinstate Netflix Fridays and give you a peek at what is on our queue these days.  Up this weekend we have something old and somethings new.  Prehaps next week, we can moe on to something boorowed and blue.

Up in the Air - In the spirit of full disclosure, I snuck a veiwing of this one in last weekend, hours before the Oscar ceremony, but it was very good and Sean didn't get a chance to...

Oscars 2009 - My wrap up

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Thursday, March 11, 2010, In : oscars
So Oscars have now come and gone and what's my take this year?

ZZzzzZZZzzzzzzzZzzzzz...

Sadly, with mostly predictable winners (not that that helped me in the pool any), boring speeches, blah hosts and a stripped-down, but yet over-stuffed ceremony, I found this year's Oscars a big let-down.  I was happy that Avatar walked away with only 3 prizes- two of which I'm sure it deserevd.  It is a gorgeous-looking film with ground breaking special effects, so I have no qualms with it winning art dir...

In a Perfect World...

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Friday, February 26, 2010,
So predictions aside and getting down to just who I plain do and don't like:

Best Picture
Who I would like to win: Up.  It's already a classic.  It'll last forever.
Who I want to lose: Um.. The Blind Side.  Did you not see my previous posting?

Best Score
Who I would like to win: Michael Giacchino - Up.  Watch the first 10 minutes and tell me I'm wrong.

Best Cinematography
Who I want to lose: Avatar.  Sorry folks, but animated movies don't count in this category!

Best Sound Mixing
Who I want to lose: T...

Why I don't Want to see "The Blind Side"

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Monday, February 22, 2010,
Now - in writing this - I fully & freely admit that I don't know much more about The Blind Side than I've picked up from the trailer, but The Blind Side just seems so disgustingly over-simplified and sappy—and let's not forget -  racist. What's that you say?  How can this movie about uplifting an impoverished black man possibly be racist?  Well,it plays the same old tired "magical African American friend" card, first called out in Time Magazine some 10 years ago.

The Legend of Bagger Va...

Another Loss for Avatar

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Monday, February 22, 2010, In : oscars

Hooray for the BAFTAS!  This weekend, The Hurt Locker continued its hot streak by nabbing the Best Picture and Best Director topohies at the British Film ceremony, leaving Avatar in the dust.  While this is very good news for the indie in its quest to capture the Oscar in 2 weeks, it certainly doesn't clinch the deal: let's not forget that Cameron's Titanic was a complete shut out at the BAFTAS and went on to tie Ben Hur for the most Oscars given to one picture.  Still, this certainly gives "...

Two Weeks Away

Posted by Oscar Nazi on Saturday, February 20, 2010, In : oscars
So with just two weeks to go until Oscars, I decided to revisit my picks.  I'm still happy that I chose to use my split pick for Picture.  It is looking by all markers that "The Hurt Locker" will have the edge, but I won't count out Hollywood's predilection to sell out and vote for the bigger, crappier movie.  Half the town was employed for "Avatar" and it was James Cameron's decade-long quest, realized.  The academy loves that stuff.

I'm feeling more secure about my pick of director, though...
